The right order to rebook an award stay

Lower price found. Now the part people get wrong. Book first, cancel second, and three checks before you touch anything.

Book → Cancel

never the other way round

You found a cheaper rate for a stay you already hold. The temptation is to cancel the old booking to "free up" the points. Don't.

Book first, cancel second

Points for a cancellable award return to your account the moment you cancel, but you don't need them to make the new booking if you have enough balance. If you don't, call it a sign to wait: cancelling first exposes you to the price moving again, or the room disappearing, between the two steps.

Three checks before rebooking

  1. Same room, same bed. Dynamic pricing applies per room type. A cheaper "standard" award may be a different room from the one you hold.
  2. Cancellation terms on the old booking. Most award stays are flexible until 24 to 72 hours before arrival. Some resorts and some dates carry longer windows. Read the line on your confirmation.
  3. Elite benefits and certificates. If the original booking used a free night certificate or was tied to a promotion, rebooking may not carry it over.

Then

Make the new reservation. Confirm it shows in your trips. Cancel the old one. Points return to your account in minutes.

If you are doing this more than once a year, you are the person this site was built for.
