A Penang weekend at the Courtyard

The Courtyard Penang on Macalister Road is a ten-minute walk from the heritage core. I booked two October nights for 29,500 points; the same dates showed 36,000 a month later. That is dynamic pricing working against you if you wait, and for you if you book early and keep watching. A heritage walk, the clan jetties, and a lot of char kway teow for the price of a mid-tier domestic flight.

Fairfield Chow Kit as a cheap KL base

A newer, quieter alternative two hundred metres from the AC Hotel. Cash rates hover around MYR 310 a night, and points-per-stay has been sitting in the mid seventies for six nights. Rooms are compact and clean, breakfast is included for Platinum and above, and the Chow Kit food scene starts at the door. Good for anyone who wants a KL week without spending the points you're saving for somewhere grander.

Six nights in Kuala Lumpur for about 60,000 Bonvoy points

The AC Hotel Kuala Lumpur sits on Jalan Ipoh with direct access to the monorail. Six nights, two adults, standard room: 74,500 points when I booked, 61,500 two weeks later. The fifth-night-free rule does the heavy lifting. Cash would have been about MYR 1,650 for the same stay, which makes this a solid but not spectacular use of points. What makes it worth it is the location and the fact that the price keeps drifting down toward the dates.

When not to spend the points at all

    Anywhere · All programs

A rule we use: if the cash rate divided by the points cost is below 0.5 cents (about ₹0.40) per point, pay cash and keep the points. Mid-week city hotels in Southeast Asia often fall below the line; beach resorts in peak season sit well above it. The point of tracking prices is not to spend points; it's to spend them where they're worth the most.
